SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA |
The Educational Foundation’s scholarship program strives to reward excellence in the study of science and technology. The United States currently faces a huge deficit in scientists, engineers and other professionals with the technical educations to provide for national defense, homeland security and a growing economy. To help alleviate this disparity, the Foundation has expanded eligibility criteria for undergraduate scholarships to include the following or related fields: technology management, management information systems, and science or mathematics education. Majors directly related to the support of U.S. national security or intelligence enterprises with relevance to the mission of AFCEA will also be eligible. For more information, contact Norma Corrales via Email.
Note: It is important to remember that AFCEA membership should not be a requirement for scholarship eligibility. Please review Chapter criteria to ensure that you do not include this as a condition for application. For more information, please check the Scholarship Start-Up Guidelines.

Science Teaching Tools At Work
in Kaiserslautern, Germany |

|
Mr. William Nelson conducting an experiment with students made possible by a $1,000 AFCEA Science Teaching Tools grant awarded by the Kaiserslautern Chapter. As part of a national after-school science program, Hands On Science Outreach (HOSO), students attended one-hour classes once a week for 8 weeks in one of three curriculums: Anatomy, Chemistry or Earth Science. The program, which encompassed three 8-week sessions, was conducted in fall 2007 and served a total of 286 students. Each class in a particular course built on the knowledge of the previous class, creating a wonderful foundation in science in a fun and exciting forum.

IMPORTANT IRS ANNOUNCEMENT
|
The following information is provided from Mr. Steve Knell, CPA,
AFCEA Chief Financial Officer. For questions, contact Norma Corrales at
703-631-6149 or Email.
The IRS has announced a new filing requirement for small nonprofits. Formerly, nonprofits whose gross receipts were normally less than $25,000 were not required to file Form 990.
Beginning in 2008, such organizations (including all AFCEA Chapters) will need to file, what the IRS is calling, a "Form 990-N e-Postcard". This will be an information filing which will ask for the organization's name, address, website, principle officers and a statement attesting to the fact that revenues do not exceed $25,000. The IRS is currently developing the form and the related filing process and will announce its completion.
Failure to file this Form will result in revocation of exempt status. Details can be found at the following website. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there are any questions.
